When you completely agree with something, it is rather difficult to say anything intelligent about it. There is a substantial body of economic study that shows that every government dollar spent on a particular issue, drives out an at least equal amount of non-profit money. Non-profits can be far more effective than any government ever could, they are not as encumbered and can be genuinely charitable. The government but stipulate, the charity can behave like a drunk. Which is not to say they always should, but sometimes that very human manner of giving far more than rationale is exactly what will make the difference. This would also be a real democratization of the process. I can change the world the way that I want to. And so can my neighbor. We wouldn’t have to fight over whose way got done.
And while I am no fan of the Bushes, Bush senior did nail it with this one:
I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good. . . . The old ideas are new again because they are not old, they are timeless: duty, sacrifice, commitment, and a patriotism that finds its expression in taking part and pitching in.
